My side of the elephant

Perspective is a funny thing. What you see is greatly affected by where you sit. That's why, from the very first time I heard the Buddhist parable about the blind men describing an elephant - one was touching its trunk, the others different body parts - and coming up with a vastly different creature, I've loved it. It so accurately describes the world we live in.

A bittersweet passenger

When I tell people that I am a Metro bus driver, invariably I am asked, "Have you had to deal with difficult passengers"? There is no question that there are situations where I have to interact with some challenging riders. Fortunately, however, most people-and dogs as well-get on and off the bus without disruption, usually resulting in a pleasant mass transit experience for everybody involved.

Do the right thing?

Seattle couldn't have asked for a lovelier Fourth of July than the one we experienced last week. I recently began a new job and so enjoyed taking a morning without a schedule to follow. A friend joined me for breakfast, and we relaxed in the backyard while viewing pictures of my recent trip to France and Spain.

An unseamly display: Undercover shopping for underwear

en should not be taken out in public on a trip to purchase undergarments with their wives. Bad things will happen. Unfunny things.I went bra shopping today, and I took my husband with me. Generally, this isn't something I do. Bringing the husband along when I look for lacy unmentionables isn't high on his list of fun activities.

John Alcorn: a super-conductor life

"I don't know how I found time to work for a living," John Alcorn says facetiously. Now that he is retired, his three hobbies consume all his time. The first is pencil drawing. "I've been drawing ever since I could hold a pencil," he says. His fine, large, detailed drawings are usually social commentaries - some satirical, some not. Now he is working on a series of illustrations of Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales," social commentaries in their own time.Another lifelong hobby of John's is building static scale-model airplanes (that don't fly). One of the proudest moments of his life was in 2000 when he won Best in Show at an international competition in Telford, England.
