Hopefully, you've heard about the work set to begin on the Fremont Bridge. You've heard about the gear replacement, drive-motor and reduction-gear improvements and the electronic control system to be installed on our bascule bridge starting at the end of this month. Certainly you've heard something about the crucial replacement of the bridge approaches - the roadways leading to the bridge from North 34th Street and Nickerson Street. The city hopes to start that work early in 2006 and to keep two lanes open for land-based traffic. Then the contractor - to be chosen this week - has one more important job.
...Washington has a governor. Finally. And, we should not be necessarily proud of that accomplishment. The Gregoire-Rossi fight to determine which one - which party - controlled the governor's office was not pretty; its negative effects will be long-lasting.Judge John Bridges recently upheld the election of Gov. Christine Gregoire and trashed the Republican claims of wrongdoing. That ruling - thoughtful, comprehensive and shrouded with a blanket of sound legal opinions - ended Dino Rossi's legal fight. From Rossi's mouth came the words: "I am ending this election contest."
namely Saturday, June 11, the last day of tournament play for Queen Anne Little League. Video Isle, the 2004 champions, faced 5 Spot Café - as it turned out, the new champs by virtue of a 5-3 win. Read all about it next week.
Now we know a bit about Dr. Coe and Messrs. Hay and McClure ("What's in a Name?," June 1), but Magnolians might wonder: What about Mrs. Blaine and Gen. Lawton? After teaching music and drama at Our Lady of Fatima School for more than a decade, Jeannie O'Meara decided it was time to make a change."I needed to do what I always want-ed to do," the Magnolia resident said.As a result, The Magnolia Theater is in motion.O'Meara is enrolling children for a two-month workshop starting in September. The sessions will culminate in "Aladdin," which will be staged for the public in November and December. Beyond "Aladdin," O'Meara is looking toward adding more children's workshops and plays and expanding to adult performances as well. The 48-year-old producer-director who has put on "The Grinch" and "The Littlest Angel" at Fatima has, in other venues, produced and directed "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "Death of a Salesman."
Yes, there is goat cheese at the Magnolia Farmers' Market!Taking the time to seriously peruse the vendors this last Saturday, I found the Monteillet Fromagerie (www.montecheese.com). According to their Web site, they were the first artisanal cheese facility in the Walla Walla Valley. They have Alpine goats and East Freisan-Lacaune sheep, guarded by Sassy the llama, along with chickens, ducks, lambs and many cats on their 27-acre farm located in Dayton along the Touchet River. Their herbed chèvre is creamy and divine and perfectly complements my fresh arugula and Brandywine tomatoes.
There are a number of Scots and people of Scottish ancestry residing on the Highlands and twin hills of Queen Anne and Magnolia. At a meeting and planning session on Queen Anne for the upcoming Highland Games, the question of the tartan arose, which I would like to share with you.Fifty million people throughout the world can claim some element of Scottish descent, and such is the thirst for information about tartans that a computer has had to be installed in a museum devoted to tartans at Comrie, in Perthshire, Scotland, to store up information about this cloth.
We often hear startling reports about the dirty air we breathe in our cities. But air pollution can be an even bigger threat in a place where you'd least expect it - your own home.Older adults, who are more likely to die from lung conditions, are particularly vulnerable, according to the Healthy Aging Partnership, a coalition of more than 30 Puget Sound not-for-profit and public organizations dedicated to the health and well-being of older adults. The amount of pollutants inside - where Americans spend 90 percent of their time - can actually exceed those outside. That's due, in a large part, to homes that are much better insulated than they used to be, according to the American Lung Association of Washington.
Caring for children and helping to ensure that they grow up cavity free has been my privilege and passion for more than 30 years. Increasing the num-ber of children from low-income house-holds who remain cavity free has recently become an important part of this work through the Access to Baby and Child Dentistry (ABCD) Program.ABCD helps local families with Medicaid-eligible children below the age of 6 find a dentist and get pre-ventive and restorative dental care. Although the program has helped nearly 60,000 children across the state to have healthier teeth (for the rest of their lives, we may hope), it is not at full capacity in King County - where there are enough participating dentists to see hundreds more children each month.
There are occasions in life when the stars are all in just the right alignment for making life a dream come true. There is always enough ice cream in your freezer, you never gain an ounce no matter how much you eat, your credit rating is in the stratosphere, the drywall guy who comes to work at your house is gorgeous, so you get to look at him all day long and bliss is yours. Obviously that's not the destiny the stars have in store for me. OK, I got the cute drywall guy, so apparently the stars believe that was enough bliss for Pamela in this lifetime. There is a dearth of ice cream in my freezer, mostly due to the fact that I ate my way through it all yesterday while ranting and raving like a lunatic on the phone to different credit-reporting agencies and mortgage-refinancing people. Actually, there wasn't much ranting; most of the conversation from my side of the phone consisted of "There's what on my credit report?" and "You're kidding me" and "I'm in collections for what?" And if you're wondering, yes, I did put on 15 pounds in a 24-hour period, thanks for asking.
I was talking to Mario Samorano, the lead sales associate at the Magnolia Post Office, one day recently when he made a suggestion. "We've got a client," Samorano said, "who tells me he was actually born in a post office. Why don't you talk to him?"That led me to the door of Belmont Forsythe's condominium and the start of a fascinating story. As I entered the condo, the first thing I noticed were the many military medals framed and hanging on the wall, along with copies of pictures and articles detailing Forsythe's career. Moving farther into his living quarters, I saw that the walls were actually decorated with quilts, over which hung framed pictures that I first mistook for painted artwork or perhaps some type of print. Closer examination revealed that they were needlepoint.
Well, it's that time again, folks. The in basket is full of little items that need to be addressed, Godden bullet style. So here goes:* Hey, the Washington election for governor is finally over. Almost seven months to the day since the polls closed. You gotta love those guys and gals at the state Republican Party for wanting to have it all. They picked the court, the county and the judge and still couldn't get Cleano Dino in Olympia's Big House.
