The new front line of crime prevention

The Seattle Police Department's South Precinct, acting on a memorandum from Mayor Greg Nickel's office, is in a a dynamic phase of cooperation with the state Department of Corrections. Within city hall and Seattle's five police precincts the SPD and DOC partnerships, exemplified by Kaffer and Bronkhorst, are known as Neighborhood Corrections Initiative Teams (NCI). The pairing allows officers the ability to more effectively supervise DOC clients residing in the city, all convicted felons according to Bronkhorst. NCI teams are proactive and are often able to intervene in a client's behavior before crimes occur.

Young nature lovers find outlet, support at Seward Park

Nine year old Molly Elder was embarrassed when she got a phone call that her drawing of a Stellar's Jay had won the prize for her age group. It was judged best of the entries by eight to 10 year olds at Audubon Washington's Art Youth Exhibit and Open House on March 4 at the Seward Park Nature Center.

Putting Othello (the one in Western Washington) on the Map

On Feb. 23, this newspaper published an error. Well, maybe it wasn't an error so much as an innocent omission. The Southeast Seattle Residents Guide 2005 left out my neighborhood: Othello.Back in December, I wrote a column about the Othello Neighborhood Design Guidelines. I described how hard my neighborhood has struggled over the past several years to establish an identity. A decade ago this neighborhood comprised Brighton (a residential neighborhood east of MLK JR. Way South) and the former Holly Park (a World War II public housing project to the west), and together they were selected to for the site of a new community development. Since then, residents from both areas worked together on the plan and have since cooperated on projects such as banners, a kiosk, and neighborhood specific design guidelines.

A conspiracy of silence?

"It gets weirder and weirder every day. The city council has refused to meet with neighbors of the Chubby and Tubby store. Casa Latina has selected this site as the new spot for their day labor program...With these concerns in mind, the City Council wants each person with an issue concerning Casa Latina to make an appointment and come to their downtown offices. This could easily cause each person to miss up to nine days of work..."

Story's tone is anti-union

"Why are all the quotes by school-bus drivers (in a Feb. 23 article) attributed to anti-union First Student drivers? The Beacon Hill News & South District Journal article appears to be driven not only by an obvious anti-union animus but also by a gross misunderstanding of labor relations."

'Celebrity Skin' exposed at Henry Art Gallery

Pete Townsend, lead guitarist for British rock legends The Who, said something to the effect that, had he been as gorgeous-to-look-at as Kurt Cobain, he might have been tempted to kill himself, too. What Townsend was implying, it seems, is that the stress of celebrity such as that experienced by Nirvana's frontman is increased exponentially when the subject of adoration also happens to be beautiful.

Making Another Run

Mayor Greg Nickels has an opponent: Capitol Hill resident Christal Wood, 36, has officially declared her candidacy for mayor. In so doing she became the first person, besides Nickels, to officially throw her hat in the ring for the city's top job.

The Oscars may be over but many best pictures remain

The first Academy for Best Motion Picture went to "Wings," But there was also an award that split year of 1927-28 for "most artistic quality of production," which went to "Sunrise." This two-pronged awards structure reflects a dichotomy that persists in our culture to this day. Some people go to the cinema seeking art; others just go to the movies. Personally, I go to the movies and am happy if I stumble onto art. There's no reason "art films" have to be hoity-toity and theoretical.

Getting ready for Pride Explosion!

With a rum-pah-tum of drums, or, more likely, the full-throated roar of women on big motorcycles, Seattle Pride will stage its annual march down Broadway on June 25 as the centerpiece of a weekend showcasing pride and equal rights for the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and trans-gender community.

The conflict between the haves and the have-nots

Everything I needed to know about global conflict I learned from my teenager. There are two ways this works. One entity, say Iraq, believing itself more powerful and, therefore, more worthy, sees something belonging to someone else that they want to own. Be it land, oil, eye shadow or that really cool boombox that Mom won in a writing contest.

Feet can be sore-no-more

My feet are killing me! You've either said it or heard it hundreds of times. It's no surprise, as we traipse through an ever-quickening spiral of meetings, shopping and endless tasks. You can expect sore feet, but you can do something about it.
