Queen Anne wins "We Heart Neighborhood" competition

It was a close race, but Queen Anne came out on top in Umpqua Bank’s battle of the “We heart neighborhood” contest, barely beating second-place Magnolia. Queen Anne received 14,710 votes and Magnolia received 13,222 votes. The two neighborhoods topped the other Puget Sound-area competitors that have an Umpqua Bank branch, such as third-place finisher Bellevue, which garnered 12,159 votes, and fourth-place finisher Phinney Ridge, with 9,340 votes.

Dan Penhollow chosen Business Person of 2011

The Magnolia Chamber of Commerce has chosen Dan Penhollow as their Business Person of 2011. Penhollow, owner and operator of The Mail Box located in the Magnolia Village on West McGraw Street, has long served the community in many ways.

"Dark Shadows:" A lesser Tim Burton

Last year when I wrote a review for Stephen Spielberg’s latest “War Horse,” I remarked that the movie “reeks of Spielberg.” I think the same can be said for Tim Burton’s (“Ed Wood,” “Edward Scissorhands”) new movie “Dark Shadows” (based on a 1960’s soap opera). A few indicators: Johnny Depp is in the starring role, Helena Bonham Carter has a role, and Danny Elfman provides the score.
