LIVING SIMPLY | Gross Domestic Happiness

Most of you know that there’s a big movement to redefine progress and success by looking at happiness in a new way. We’ve always defined national progress as Gross Domestic Product (GDP)— a figure that measures the money flowing through the system, whether for good or ill. For instance, if you have an accident today, you’re contributing to the GDP because more money will flow. The more you get hurt, the better!

GUEST COLUMN | Transit service in Magnolia gets boost with return of one late-night bus trip

Throughout King County, people are clamoring for more transit service at a time when Metro Transit’s revenues are far short of what’s needed to pay for current service levels — let alone, add service to address growth. That has been a source of frustration here in Magnolia, where people are feeling the loss of late-night service on Route 24.

GUEST COLUMN | Restore higher education as middle-class cornerstone

To balance the budget during the Great Recession, the state allowed large increases in tuition and, at the same time, enacted massive cuts that left higher education chronically underfunded. Those cuts were not a solution; they were a triage in a time of crisis. Now it’s time to help the patient back to health.

Those developers stand to enrich themselves, aided by zoning variances, with potential new high-rises that might reach 400 feet.

Queen Anne residents search for heart of community

Queen Anne Books, a popular neighborhood hub, shut its doors last November. Then, Easy Street Records closed after 12 years of business on lower Queen Anne. Though Queen Anne Book Co. will open in the same storefront under new ownership this weekend, the closures spurred residents to rally together and discuss how they could help the neighborhood.

GUEST COLUMN | Who pays? The human toll

A hairdresser I know had to quit her job in Bellevue because she couldn’t afford the state Route 520 tolls. “Oh, yeah, the Lexus bridge. Not driving that one anymore.” Luckily, she works for a chain so she was able to move her job to Queen Anne. How many more people will lose their jobs because they can’t afford the Interstate 90 tolls to drive to work on Mercer Island or to the Eastside?
