Expert's outlook for 2012: Interest rates are rising

Seattle is fortunate: Forbes Magazine predicted we would have a strong, early recovery from the recession, and it looks like Forbes was right. The magazine also forecast the recovery would be sustained for a number of years due in part to our strong jobs market.

Sex, lies and the lack of remorse

Former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno, 85, succumbed Jan. 22 to lung cancer. His much-ballyhooed motto for his football program, “Success with honor,” has been a rallying point for those who have defended Paterno’s actions, or inactions, in the face of his program’s sex-abuse scandal.

Sacred Heart food service to reopen Feb. 21

Thanks to a generous show of support from donors, the Queen Anne food bank being run out of the basement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church near the Seattle Center will reopen on Feb. 21.

Magnolia's Seattle Pie Company closes in a rush

  Alyssa and Patrick Lewis, the couple who shot to fame in recent years because of their pies, abruptly closed the Seattle Pie Company Café in Magnolia at the end of January.    The couple says they closed the café to focus on their family and their wholesale business.

Queen Anne's Gen. Peter Chiarelli retires from the second highest army post

 Queen Anne High School alum Gen. Peter Chiarelli, who became the Army vice chief of staff after a distinguished military career, has announced his retirement.    According to the Seattle Times, Chiarelli, 61, has received praise for his focus on the plight of today’s soldiers, his work to reduce suicides and his help for the families of soldiers.

Group art show gets girly for February

In keeping with the stereotypical feminine theme of Valentine’s Day, Bherd Studios Gallery in Greenwood will present “Pretty, Sexy, Dirty Girly,” a multimedia exhibit featuring all female artists who will explore the theme of female sexuality. This fourth-annual all-female show will feature about 50 pieces. Because some will feature nudity, this show is for mature audiences only, said Michele Osgood, co-owner of Bherd Studios.

District elections needed to ensure accountability

 Seattle’s citizens have become strangers in their own land, increasingly ignored and treated as outsiders at City Hall by staff and leaders supposedly elected to serve them. That’s certainly our impression informed by 35-plus years of involvement in Seattle politics.
