Editorial: Let's skip the 'Kumbaya' moment over the state budget

Before the self-congratulatory, bipartisan glow over the 2011-2013 budget fades in Olympia, let’s remember a few things. The state Senate, following the House plan, approved more than $4 billion in cuts in the late hours of May 25. Those cuts resulted in divots from higher education, health care and services to the poorest of the poor.

Looking under the veil

Musings from the Laundromat

Close your eyes and picture this:  Woman in Burka.   What do you see? Dark, flowing fabric? Face visible? Just eyes? Is she walking through a barren, dusty, rock-strewn landscape? Or seated in her home, comfortable but isolated, saved only for her husband’s eyes.   Or… is she walking down the halls of a hospital in Seattle, a refugee seeking medical care, cut off not only from her own people but also the people amongst whom she now lives.

Yesler Terrace far from being the touted 'sustainable' project

Recently, Seattle Housing Authority’s (SHA) board unanimously approved moving forward with redevelopment of Yesler Terrace. The 561 units of public housing on the 28-acre site just north of Harborview Medical Center will be wiped out and replaced with as many as 5,000 units of mostly high-end apartments and condominiums. To date, SHA has committed to replacing only 490 of those public-housing units. That’s less than one in 10 of the new units serving the poorest and neediest households in our city.

Change is time's constant, even in murder

Wilken's Watch

One of the reasons I fell in love with Seattle right after my first move here from my hometown of Cincinnati in 1984 was that everything looked similar but was completely different Back home I had worked as a rewrite man for WCPO-TV9 News, Cincinnati’s CBS affiliate. We competed against Jerry Springer, the recently defrocked Mayor, and Nick Clooney, just a pretty face who fathered one of America’s better actors, George, although we had no idea in 1980.

Editorial: Bill and Melinda: Welcome to the neighborhood

The June 2 grand opening of the impressive Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation headquarters in Lower Queen Anne is undoubtedly one of the neighborhood’s most momentous social and financial events in years.  It couldn’t happen at a better time for Lower Queen Anne merchants, who appear to have suffered more than their share of economic blows in the past few years.

After speaking with the teen, he turned around and saw the rest of the group running towards him.             The victim tells police the group knocked him down and took his cell phone and wallet from his pockets. He said that although the group kicked and punched him, he did not have any injuries from the event. The group then ran off, and the victim couldn’t provide police with a description of any of them. He did say that he found his sweatshirt on the ground. It had been in his backpack.
