Principal leaves Coe Elementary after less than a year

Reasons for her leaving remain a mystery as parents and students wait for principal to comment

The mystery surrounding the sudden departure of Frantz Coe Elementary Principal Tate Loftin continues to linger after school district officials announced her successor for the rest of this school year on May 12.

Magnolia among the city's safest neighborhoods

Seattle police offer tips for deterring burglars and staying safe

espite the constant talk about crime in the Magnolia area, Seattle Police Capt. Joseph Kessler told members of the Magnolia Community Club on Thursday, May 12, that the area’s crime rate hasn’t been this low for decades.

Finding your way home

I used to fall in love twice a month.  Every other weekend, without fail, it happened. And always with the same man. Luckily it was the man I was – and am – married to. The trigger was my husband’s bi-monthly call to his father. For an hour I’d hear laughter and tenderness as he filled his dad in on the latest news:  kids’ accomplishments, work successes, things that would make his dad proud and give him something to brag to his friends about. Glowing summaries commonly reserved for holiday letters and reunion bios. And, eventually, elderly parents.

Prom night's lesson in terror

It’s prom time again. Some of the high schools have already held their big spring formal dances, but lessons in dating terror still lie ahead for a number of teens out there. When we went to the prom, the idea of parents renting hotel rooms for us students or even staying out all night was something that couldn’t even be comprehended. Times have changed I guess.

Lest We Forget

Is Seattle detective worthy of a second chance?

Last week, Seattle Police Chief John Diaz announced he would temporarily suspend Det. Shandy Cobane as punishment for an incident that happened April 17, 2010, where Cobane was filmed telling Martin Monelli he would “beat the…Mexican piss” out of him as Monelli lay prone on the ground.  City Attorney Pete Holmes declined to charge Cobane, saying the kick Cobane delivered to the head of the man in custody was in keeping with acceptable police tactics.

Medical marijuana: clarity, compromise needed

Kudos to Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles (D-Seattle) for wading into the mess that is Washington state’s medical marijuana laws. Still, even after the Senator’s nearly two-year effort to develop a rational medical-marijuana bill, it may be time to go back to the drawing board.  The lack of consensus between the federal government, state officials and local jurisdictions on even the most basic aspects of the issue makes it virtually impossible for a responsible law to be passed this special session.

Prisoner of Second Avenue Features Seattle Dream Cast

Currently enjoying a revival at ACT Theatre, “The Prisoner of Second Avenue” brings a stellar cast of Seattle actors under the able direction of Seattle and Broadway favorite and former Intiman artistic director Warner Shook.  Neil Simon’s 1971 comedy recounts the downhill slide of middle-aged advertising executive Mel Edison (R. Hamilton Wright), whose redundancy after years of faithful corporate service leads to a “nervous breakdown”.

Are You ready for some Grandaddy Purple?

Medical marijuana dispencary comes to Magnolia

As workers hammer away to put the finishing touches on her offices, Magnolia’s newest business owner discusses the line of rather unique products she plans to sell to her customers.  They include Blue Dream, Grandaddy Purple, Train Wreck and Bubba Kush. These trippy product names are for strains of medical marijuana that Maria Mendoza is preparing to sell to patients with a doctor’s prescription. Her new office is a medical marijuana dispensary and will offer both the leafy form of marijuana to be smoked and “edibles,” such as brownies or cookies.

Interbay to be home to new farmers market

There’s a new farmers market in town and organizers are hoping that the Queen Anne and Magnolia area is big enough to handle it. The Interbay farmers market will be open Thursday afternoons, beginning June 9th, and will run from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. It will be located in the parking lot in front of the Whole Foods store at 2001 15th Ave. W.

A Modest Proposal

Recent failures offer lessons for homeless projects

With small fanfare, discussion about homelessness in Seattle shifted. A semi-permanent tent encampment at the Sunny Jim lot in SODO won't stay on the table. Nickelsville departed for West Seattle rather than extend a stay into the summer at the old Lake City firehouse. City Hall has proposed to convert that firehouse into emergency shelter.

From home of the brave to the house for complaints

Wilken's Watch

America and its Seattle precincts seem to be turning into a culture of whiners. Every single group, ethnic, racial, gender and even those of all sexual preferences appear to have a grudge against big government and smaller local government. Us and Them. Oppressors and consumers. Some of these groups have at least an historical basis for their complaints.

Too many women still being caught in the crossfire

Roundabout

Of all the details about the raid that killed Osama bin Laden, the one that stays with me is the death of a woman during the assault.  At first, the media reported she died as a “human shield,” held in a final act of cowardice by bin Laden himself or one of his accomplices. Then the media said she had been “caught in the crossfire.”  Finally, it was revealed that she was shot while unarmed in her quarters and was the wife of the Al-Qaeda courier who literally led American troops to bin Laden’s doorstep.

Editorial: Will the anti-tunnel referendum really be about...nothing?

In a drama that appears to be getting increasingly confusing and absurd by the moment, the best comment of the week may belong to Seattle City Council President Richard Conlin who dubbed the August referendum on the deep-bore tunnel as the “Seinfeld referendum.” “It’s a referendum about nothing,” Conlin told KUOW listeners recently, referring to the description of the popular 1990s comedy series.
