This week the Washington State Legislature convenes for the long, 105-day, session that is the first year of a two-year biennial cycle. This legislative session will likely be the most difficult in my 20 years as a state legislator as we convene to cut $4.6 billion out of an already diminished state budget. While it is unclear exactly where these historic reductions to services and jobs will occur, there is no question that budget discussions will dominate the legislative agenda.
A few weeks ago as I was wheeling our recycling tub, The Green Monster, out to the curb, I looked down into the bin for the used glass and thought about all of the soda pop bottles that I'd recycled to supplement my allowance.Back when I was still in grade school, cashing in used bottles was the classic method of coming up with some spare change. That and mowing lawns, of course.

Prowling Pirate On Monday, Jan. 10 at 3:37 p.m. Seattle Police received an email reporting a theft that had occurred the previous Saturday, Jan. 8, on the high seas of North Queen Anne. The victim reports that the pirates boarded his boat through an unsecured hatch and stole his computer and other items. The man said he had waited to report the theft because he had posted signs around the marina that his computer was lost in hopes that somebody would return it. Today he decided that he had waited long enough, and emailed police to report the incident. No word on what, if anything, was done about the theft.
Neighbor Appreciation Day The 17th annual Neighbor Appreciation Day is on Saturday, Feb. 12. It’s the day when we reach out and express thanks to those who live and work around us. It begins with the City's 120th Clean & Green event in Counterbalance Park at 9 a.m. to noon. Last year saw 60 neighbors, businesses and city officials working on projects to clean up the area. Spearheaded by the Church of Scientology Environmental Task Force and co-sponsored by the Greater Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce and the Uptown Alliance, we hope to make this year's community clean-up an even greater success! Refreshments, tools and projects provided on site. For more information, contact Ann Pearce at 206-284-0604 or Christa at Christa.Dumpys@Seattle.Gov.
