Just in time for Halloween:

'The Lieutenant of Inishmore' is bloody good fun

In the world of "The Lieutenant of Inishmore," violence has become the end as well as the means, and ideology is lost somewhere under the piles of corpses. Martin McDonagh's Grand Guignol of a farce, directed by ACT Artistic Director Kurt Beattie, takes violence up to and over the height of the absurd, but its characters are solidly grounded in the economic and political realities of a rural Ireland where joining the IRA may be one of the few job opportunities available for young people.

I am dating myself right here, right now, with my next sentence but I don't care -- here goes!

The life boat

Guest column

When people hear that I live on a 42-foot sailboat in Ballard, the most common reaction I get is, "You live on a sailboat? Wow. That is SO cool!" I suppose it is. But during the decision and then the transition process I felt anything but cool. I didn't just say, "Yeah, let's do it! Let's sell our house and all our stuff and live simply and shrink our footprint." I cried and argued and worried and stressed and resisted - qualities and behavior not often associated with cool people. So while it may be "cool" to live on a boat, I feel like an imposter accepting this particular designation.

Seasonal changes ...

Notes from the Garden

What could be better than watching two bluejays hopping and inching their way up into the open branches at the top of a redwood tree, and perhaps playing hide and go seek with each other. There was obviously an important dynamic going on between them. You could sense the bond.
