Mariners baseball: Believe big...someday

I hate to say it but it looks like the Mariners aren't going to win the World Series this year - or even this decade.

The Coaching Minute

The to-do list for Summer's end

As summer ends each year, I like to use that special time to assess what's important to me for the coming seasons. I've found the following action tips help guide me to progress on what's meaningful to me starting in late August.

Squatter saga ends peacefully

The great squatter saga has come to an end and the house on Magnolia Way West is once again empty.

St. Margaret's reunion a major success

It was a great turnout on Sunday for the first reunion of teachers and students of St. Margaret's School, a Catholic school that served both Queen Anne and Magnolia communities for nearly half a century.

Congestion and cyclist safety dominate Dexter Avenue North open house

Concerns about cyclist safety and congested roadways were the main issues raised at an open house last Thursday to discuss proposed changes to Dexter Avenue North.

Cape Flattery is situated on the far northwest point of the Continental United States, and is among the most breathtaking sights in this country. Due to a number of sheer cliffs, please exercise extreme caution with younger children.

Seattle's Hey Marseilles flies above the Bumbershoot crowd

One of the more interesting up-and-coming bands at this year's Bumbershoot is an eclectic group of local musicians who point to French folk music for inspiration.

Diversions 9/1

TheaterUMO Ensemble is celebrating 20 years in the Northwest with a new production of El Dorado. Created in the style of 'Buffoon Theatre,' El Dorado's grotesque, fantastical, irreverent Buffoons play at humanity and mock our follies, casting knowing glances at our obsession with power. El Dorado focuses on the Spanish conquistadors' quest for the legendary "Kingdom of Gold" in the Americas. The play is recommended for ages 12 years and older, due to mature content and situations. Ticket prices for adults is $20; 25 and under, $15; and children up to 12, $10.

She said the laptop had been in the study area of her house when she left on Aug 10 at about 12:30 p.m. She returned that evening at about 7:30 p.m. and when she sat down to do her homework later that night, she found that her laptop along with its lime green soft case was missing. The power cord was still there. The victim told police she could not find any signs of forced entry to the home. But she found that her spare house key was missing from a bookcase shelf. She said that she was having the house locks changed that day. Nothing else was noted as missing or disturbed at the time of the call.

McGinn's jobs plan a little too good to be true

Editorial 9/1

It's difficult not to be skeptical when any politician talks about creating jobs in the midst of such a slow economic recovery.

The changing ritual of back to school fashion

Ramblings

If you've been watching TV for any longer than 15 minutes during the last couple of weeks, you've no doubt been aware that you've been inundated with back-to-school commercials. Just open the daily newspaper to the comic pages and there are at least five strips all dealing with the upcoming school year.

Don't end summer quite yet, please...

Notes from the Garden by Madeleine Wilde

I blandly opened the front door to go out the other day, and POW!, lying right in front of me was a single perfectly formed maple leaf stridently announcing the fall season.
