Police Blotter 4/14

I just called to say...A woman called police on March 29 at around 3 p.m. to report her phone had been stolen while dancing the night before in a nightclub located in the 300 block of Fifth Avenue North. The victim stated she had been dancing with the suspect at about 11:30 p.m. on Mar. 28. While dancing the suspect's hand was near her front pocket, where her phone was located. She realized her phone was missing around midnight.

Bullies and the victim's solution

WIlken's Watch

If you can get past all the Tiger Woods stories the most disturbing thing in the newspapers recently is the horrible story out of Massachusetts, where a young girl named Phoebe Prince, 15, hung herself after being bullied unmercifully by a group of at least nine "nice" American kids.

Mornings are of sound and taste, and music

Ramblings

People who sleep in until half the morning has already disappeared are missing some of the most beautiful parts of the day. On mornings when the sun is just beginning to clear the Cascades, the Olympics are positively glowing in their fresh coating of newly fallen white, and the birds are a regular calliope of sound.

Blowback in the face of health care

Seattle Soundings

On March 21, President Barack Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act into law - with 22 pens - putting a merciful end to more than a year of political posturing, hot air and endless misinformed rhetoric. And on the following day, Washington state Attorney General Rob McKenna joined nine other Republican state attorneys general in suing the federal government, claiming that the bill, bitterly opposed by Republicans, is an unconstitutional infringement on states' rights.

Mini-Mart owner deserves equal rights

As a life-long resident of Queen Anne Hill I can only feel outrage and embarrassment over how some of the people of QA are treating the owners of the new mini-mart at 5 Corners.

Claims dropped in slain cops suit

Editorial

Three of the four families of the Lakewood police officers gunned down last November have rightly dropped their claims against Pierce County. Those claims accused the county of not monitoring telephone calls made from jail by gunman Maurice Clemmons. Clemmons, in his calls to family members, had threatened to kill police officers.

The Sustainable Magnoliarecycling team is initiating a program to facilitate food waste pick-up at apartment and condominium complexes in Magnolia. It is estimated that an average apartment complex generates up to one ton of food waste per year. That material could be recycled and reused rather than adding to the burden on our land fills. If you rent or own an apartment or condominium in a complex in Magnolia, and would like to help initiate food waste pick-up for your building, please email the recycling team at recycle@sustainablemagnolia.org. Reminder: Sustainable Magnolia meets at 7 p.m., Monday, April 19.

Zaw pizzaria to open on the Hill this Saturday

Within days of seeing the for lease sign at 1635 Queen Anne Ave. N., Zaw Artisan Bake at Home Pizza co-founder Greg Waring signed the papers. Since opening the first Zaw, Waring's added to the local flare by getting involved with farmers markets. Zaw's kitchen creates a featured local/seasonal recipe each week.

Fey and Carrell funny in mediocre 'Date Night'

Since Steve Carrell and Tina Fey are hilarious, there is an assumption that by putting them together and throwing them timely one-liners, the result will be twice the hilarity.

Police Blotter 4/21

PunchyPolice responded to the intersection of 11th Avenue West and West Blaine Street after receiving a report of an assault at 9:40 p.m. on April 11. Upon arrival police spoke with the victim who stated he had been in an argument with the suspect when the suspect suddenly became aggressive and punched him on the left side of his face. When democracy counts

Seattle Soundings

Sure, corporations are people whose dollars are (in the Orwell formulation) more equal speech than others. And, yeah, our political system is more corrupt the higher you go, with the halls of Congress filled with actors auditioning for their future careers as lobbyists for the companies they now "regulate."

City drama turns against homeless

Lest we forget

This week, on as "Seattle City Hall Turns," we find a previously underwhelming Mayor Mike McGinn locked in a battle with wannabe mayor, Seattle City Councilmember Tim Burgess over a new Seattle ordinance its opponents say unfairly targets panhandlers.
