Three books to keep the mind going, entertained

Books are your friends. If they are any good you can be taught something by them. You can also be entertained. You can have a conversation with someone smarter that you are - the author hopefully. Or you can at least see the world through different eyes.

'Last Song' is dreadfully sappy

Tragically, it’s another Nicholas Spark’s romance

Sappy, predictable and boring. These are the words that sum up Julie Anne Robinson's newest film "The Last Song," based on the book by celebrated author Nicholas Sparks, who co-wrote the screenplay.

'Paradise Lost'

Intiman’s revival goes beyond economic comparisons

Intiman's revival of Clifford Odet's 1935 play "Paradise Lost" consciously demands comparison with our current Great Recession. The play depicts the financial ruin of a middle-class family (the Gordons) during the Great Depression. Many will find the Gordons' dinner table discussions all too familiar - the regret of those who overspent without forethought, impotent railing at the lack of jobs and opportunity, distrust of government and fear-mongering politicians. But the play's power derives less from comparing the woes brought on by hard economic times than from Odet's timeless character studies of individuals coping with life's downturns.

Dragons, Huskies, Hoffman and a mailbox

Inside View

...Took my daughter to see "How to Train Your Dragon" at Pacific Place last week. Great story, great message and visually stunning in 3-D. But even better was some quality time with my eldest daughter. She's 7 and just like any kid, loves movies. So we went and we both loved the movie. There we were, wearing those 3-D glasses and eating popcorn. I have a feeling I'm going to remember that day for a long time...

Moving toward April ...

Notes from the Garden

The asparagus tips are pushing through the cold, damp soil. The maple trees are unfurling their leaves. The fuzzy white sword fern fronds are straightening their backs and starting to show some tender green as they reach for the sky. The solitary crocus blooms that announced the new spring season have vanished and the daffodils have done yeoman duty this year in announcing the end of winter.
