Walk & Roll: B.F. Day Elementary School, 3921 Linden Ave. N., has raised about $9,600 so far from its Walk & Roll fund-raiser earlier this fall.Tree sale: Green Lake Elementary School, 2400 N.E. 65th St., is selling cut holiday trees for the 22nd year. From Sunday, Nov. 25, through Dec. 16, the school will sell noble firs, Douglas firs, grand firs and Shasta and Fraser firs, as well as wreaths and swags.

Dreaming the Emerald City at the Frye

By 1890, the still young city of Seattle was a bustling municipality where smart entrepreneurs could make a lot of money and rise to the top of the social scale. Among these go-getters were Charles Frye and Horace C. Henry, both of whom developed an interest in the arts and were responsible for establishing two of the region's leading art institutions: the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington and the Frye Art Museum on First Hill.

Be thankful - avoid home cooking fires

Three shot at Capitol Hill nightclub

Police seek suspect following altercation at SugarSeattle police responded in force early Monday morning to reports that three patrons at Sugar dance club had been shot in an altercation inside the club. One man, 22, was shot in the abdomen. A 19-year-old man was shot in the wrist, and a woman, 18, was shot in the leg. All were transported to Harborview Medical Center, where the gunshot victim underwent surgery.

The evolution of the All-Knowing

Remember the good, old days when you were viewed as the epitome of All-Knowingness? There was nothing that the dear ones would ask that you couldn't answer. You weren't certain you were totally accurate, but such a thought never occurred to your children. It was a great ego-booster until it slowly faded as children grew older and your infallibility was proved to be rather fallible.

Madison Valley instructor offers 'yoga vacations

Madison Valley-based yoga teacher and mother Rebekkah LaDyne knows that parents and kids need fun and replenishing vacations, and a family yoga vacation provides just that. LaDyne refers to a yoga vacation as "time for me, time for you and time for us!"

Libraries enter Wi-Fi age

The Seattle Public Library now offers free wireless Internet access at all open locations, including the Douglass-Truth Library, 2300 E. Yesler Way, which recently added the service.It is coming later to Madrona.

St. Therese Parish plans to expand office building

The St. Therese Parish Center plans to add a second floor to its administrative building, expanding the premises by 880 feet. According to architect Kevin Broderick, the application for a building permit has been submitted, though he noted that the exact time line for approval is uncertain.

Powell Barnett Park beginning to live up to its name

Maisha Barnett saw a change: instead of five people there were hundreds. But she noticed one specific group of about 30 people; they were laughing, playing cards and dominoes, and they cooked on the barbecues and used the park to play games. "I never thought a group of people would give me so much joy, it was an experience I never anticipated," said Barnett, chairperson of the Powell Barnett Legacy Project, which has made dramatic improvements to the Powell Barnett Park on Martin Luther King Jr. Way and East Jefferson Street.

BUSINESS Notes

The Arboretum Foundation welcomed two new staff members over the summer. DeVere Pollum, who has worked for the last 35 years in health care and at the University of Hawaii, is the foundation's new part-time accountant. Previously the senior publications editor for the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for eight years, Niall Dunne is the new part-time communications manager.

LAND USE: Commercial rezones considered

PUBLIC HEARINGS:The Department of Planning and Development is proposing to amend Sections 23.34.010 and 23.34.072 of the Seattle Municipal Code to add an additional exemption to the rezone criteria used in the designation of single-family zones in the Northgate Overlay District. This proposed amendment would allow areas in the Northgate Overlay District that are zoned Single Family and meet the criteria for single-family zoning contained in Subsection B of Section 23.34.011 to be rezoned through a contract rezone to a neighborhood-commercial zone when the block (defined as an area bounded by street lot lines) is more than 80-percent zoned neighborhood-commercial.
