Queen Anne resident Mary Sherhart, president of the organization, is also artistic and managing director for the program.
For me, Thanksgiving has always been associated with my paternal grandmother, whose cooking was, in my father's opinion, the apex alongside which all other cooking fell short. You can imagine how popular this made him with my mother, who was a very good and creative cook in her own right. (Although she's still alive, I refer to my mom's cooking abilities in the past tense since she's refused to use any kitchen appliance more complicated than a microwave since her mid-40s.But "creative" cooking wasn't really what my grandmother was all about — at least in the way the word is commonly understood. Her skills shined with the basics: she was a meat-and-potato-and-Yorkshire-pudding kind of gal. A genius at canning, baker of the world's best pies, originator of the sweetest razor clam fritters and the creamiest blue cheese dressing I've ever tasted.
'Dreaming the Emerald City' By 1890, the still young city of Seattle was a bustling municipality where smart entrepreneurs could make a lot of money and rise to the top of the social scale. Among these go-getters were Charles Frye and Horace C. Henry, both of whom developed an interest in the arts and were responsible for establishing two of the region's leading art institutions: the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington and the Frye Art Museum on First Hill.Until now, their collections have resided in the separate establishments and little effort has been made to view them jointly as a phenomenon of both time and place. The current exhibition at the Frye, "Dreaming the Emerald City: The Collections of Charles and Emma Frye and Horace C. Henry," allows us to compare the tastes of these art lovers and tap the cultural climate of Seattle in the Gilded Age. It's a handsomely mounted exhibit.
Seattle Rep presents Machado's 'The Cook'The subtle aroma of fine food wafts through the theater, as Eduardo Machado's bittersweet drama "The Cook" explores the culture and politics of Cuba.Machado's thoughtful three-act saga spans four decades, between 1958 and 1997, exposing the lives of those who fled Cuba and those who stayed behind. It's both a history lesson and a reflection of Muchado's own experience. He was only 8 years old when his family sent him to live with an uncle in the United States.

Originally scheduled to start last June, work has begun on converting Terminal 91 to a cruise-ship terminal, according to the Port of Seattle. T-91 has been used for years as moorage for fishing boats and barges, which normally operate at different times of the year than the cruise ships, according to the Port. The conversion project at the pier between Queen Anne and Magnolia was delayed when an appeal was lodged about the adequacy of the project's Final Environmental Impact Study (FEIS), according to former Port spokesman Mick Shultz. The FEIS was completed last February, and work began on Monday this week to install concrete pilings at the pier, according to a Port press release.
One might expect to see pets at a pet supply store, and on Queen Anne, one does. At All the Best Pet Care there's always an animal about, and at Mes Amis Pet Boutique, on Galer, there are Sam and Lola. Sam is a male cat with long white hair; Lola is a female gray tabby. Both were rescued from Animal Talk by owner Nicole Ryan. "Lola is shy," says Ryan, "and Sam is mischievous and social. He loves to use shoes as a scratching post, especially tennis shoes with the mesh on top. People usually get a big kick out of it.Photo Gallery
Last Friday, the Christmas season officially hove into view - from the Bluff, at least - with the Magnolia Village Holiday Open House. (Yes, the lighting does seem more Halloweenish.)
On Thursday, many of us will be talking turkey and dressing and all the wondrous side dishes, and we will join family and friends at table, and hopefully remember to sing praises of Thanks for all our abundance. And, instead of worrying about the flat soufflé or the forgotten cranberry dish, we will, each in our own style, find the best way to reach out and generously share our incredible abundance with those outside our normal realms of comfort.Well, that is the unvarnished dream.
Capping its undefeated, untied regular season, the Seattle Pacific University women's soccer team rode its rapid-fire play into the NCAA Final Four Nov. 17, with a 4-0 win over Incarnate Word University. When the city announced several years ago that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was building its world headquarters east of the Seattle Center, it was obvious the existing SeaSk8 skateboard park on the site had to go.No problem, the city said. A brand-new one would be built on the Seattle Center campus before or soon after the old one was demolished, officials promised. The old skateboard facility, the first in the city, was whacked last January, but the soonest a new skateboard park will be online is the spring of 2009.
The recent midterm election held both good news and bad news, according to a panel of speakers at the 14th annual postelection analysis and fundraiser Nov. 15 for state senator and Queen Anne resident Jeanne Kohl-Welles.The bad news at the event - which was held at the Hale's Ales Brewery and Pub in Ballard and also included a silent auction for the "Thundering" 36th District Democrats - was that less than half registered voters in the state went to the polls or sent mail-in ballots this year.
