In any community, a school's success is not determined only by the professional expertise of principal, teachers and staff, but also by the countless other support systems set in place to assist in guiding students along their educational journey. Support systems such as PTAs are integral in filling the inherent gaps that occur in a large public educational system. However, in Queen Anne and Magnolia the educational community has taken it a step farther, developing a unique, nonprofit organization that advocates for schools and students. Successful Schools in Action, or SSIA, encourages a strong and collaborative community through which seven neighborhood public schools share resources and work closely with neighborhood partners. With the principals from all seven schools working collectively.

A king with a pretty daughter to give away, and a riddle for her potential suitors to solve...A prince looking for a wife, willing to jump through whatever silly hoops the princess' father puts before him...That's not too complicated a beginning for a story by William Shakespeare. Yet there's something terribly unnerving about the way this opening scene to "Pericles" plays out, and it plays out quite well in Seattle Shakespeare Company's haunting new production.
They call him Rooney. No, not the Wayne Rooney. Not the thug-like budding soccer prodigy and Manchester United superstar who scores goals with a smile on his face. He is the other Rooney. The smile is still there, but the story is different. Twice a week, every week, a DHL truck rolls up Third and parks itself outside the slightly worn turf of Queen Anne Bowl. Its paint is the customary bright yellow and its shine is distinct, but what is most notable about it is its driver, Scott Woodward, age 38. Also known as Rooney.

After spending six months at the Elizabeth Gregory Home (EGH), Ruthie Ringler is back on her feet with a new job and a permanent home for her and her son."They've given me a chance to sit back, take a deep breath and get all my ducks in a row," she said. "It's been amazing." Ringler's success story is just one of many touched by staff at EGH, a transitional housing and drop-in center for homeless women. The home celebrated its first anniversary just last month, although the idea behind the home began in 1999. University Lutheran Church's social ministry committee conducted a survey of homelessness in the area and found more than 300 women without a warm bed to sleep in at night.
At 23, Sgt. Jamiell Goforth has accomplished enough for a lifetime. Once heralded as a phenomenal performance artist, the Seattle native swapped her dance slippers for Army boots after graduating high school and enlisting in the Army in 2004 as a combat medic. In just three short years after enlisting, she's already made the history books, taking home one of the U.S. Armed Forces' highest honors: Forces Command (FORSCOM) Soldier of the Year.
I'm appalled at how far the level of public debate has fallen on Referendum 67.Referendum 67 has become a referendum on trial lawyers vs. insurance companies. A better debate is whether this law brings any added benefit that exceeds its cost - particularly for the more vulnerable in our society. I believe the answer is no.
