When I returned to Ketchikan, Mark told me about the Gravina's third and fourth trips. For starters, he said that the transition in the galley went smoothly because Holly Hughes and I are similar cooks. The third trip, marked by hilarity and successful salmon fishing, explored the nooks and crannies of Chichagof Island, starting and ending in Pelican. In our friend Bill's journal entry, the phrase "we fished some more" is repeated like a mantra. Guests also fished on the fourth trip, which returned from Pelican to Ketchikan via a different route from the one taken on the way up. Our friend Bunny even caught a halibut! But that trip was more contemplative. Holly and a guest named Jim each read some of their poetry, and Bunny's husband John read an excerpt from his novel. All four guests requested kayaks for next year (their request will be granted)

Community members living around Children's Hospital & Regional Medical Center in Laurelhurst are not satisfied with new revisions presented last month at a press conference.Children's Hospital, now 100 years old, presented a revised master plan that would reduce the height of a proposed tower from 240 to 160 feet and add two new entrances beyond the Sand Point Way Northeast entrance. I sometimes think that every woman I know is on a diet. And if they're not on one, they're about to start one or they're just coming off one. You can tell, because they're cranky- and hungry. I've found some odd fad diets that made me cranky just reading about them. The first time I read about the Lemonade Diet, I thought, "Hey, finally a diet that will give me some vitamin C!" You may know this diet by the name of The Master Cleanse.

From the former Soviet Union to Chile, Cuba and Venezuela, the Seattle Peace Chorus (SPC) isn't afraid of conflict. They sing to promote peace. The SPC began in 1983, when director Helen Lauritzen believed she could help end the threat of nuclear war by making personal connections with others through music. The group started small, but her passion quickly spread as more and more people lent their voices to unite in delivering a message for peace through song.

If Christmas is all about nostalgia, then Stone Soup's current production billed as "A Child's Christmas in Wales" meets the criterion. It reminded me of my own turn on the stage when I was a fourth-grader and played a role in my school's Christmas pageant. The Stone Soup offering is at about the same level of professionalism as that fourth-grade play so long ago. So my word of warning is this:If you are the parent, relative or good friend of one of the child actors, you probably will like this. If not, avoid it!
