City seeks Immigrant Board members

The city of Seattle is seeking candidates for positions on the newly formed Seattle Immigrant and Refugee Advisory Board. As called for in Mayor Greg Nickels' recently released Immigrant and Refugee Report and Action Plan, the board will advise the mayor and City Council on issues affecting immigrant and refugee communities in Seattle.

The Summit thrives as a neighborhod oasis

Hidden on a side street in a residential area of west Capitol Hill is a little known gem called the Summit Public House. Public House is a britishism for tavern, and the Summit indeed qualifies as a neighborhood tavern."You really see about 70 percent regulars," guessed Sal Huerthas, one of the bartenders on a recent Friday night. He's been working there for a year, recruited from a barstool after being a regular customer himself for several years.

Paul Dorpat 'keeps clam' in new book about Ivar Haglund

Paul Dorpat doesn't rest on his laurels.Last spring, Dorpat, 68, and co-author Jean Sherrard saw the publication of their "Washington Then & Now," an ambitious, highly regarded photographic record of Washington's past. For the last few months the pair have stumped the state on behalf of their book.These days, Dorpat, who writes a weekly "Now & Then" column for The Seattle Times, is taking on a Seattle icon: Ivar Haglund, who died in 1985 at age 79.

Slammers take second

Jenay McAuley's walk-off grand slam to end the first game of the district tournament against Northwest Seattle set the tone for the Northeast Little League Softball All-Star team, the Slammers. Two exciting games later, this group of 9- and 10-year-old girls from Laurelhurst, Wedgwood, Ravenna, View Ridge and Lake City had earned the title of District Champions, beating the team from Woodinville 7-6.

South End neighborhoods to rally with each other during the August 7 National Night Out Against Crime

The streets will be watching on Aug. 7 as the National Night Out against crime celebrates its 24th anniversary this year. Streets and blocks throughout the South End will be closed down for neighborhoods to gather to defend against crime in their back yards. According to South Precinct Crime Prevention Coordinator Mark Solomon, nearly 100 small block parties will be held in the early evening hours in the Beacon Hill, Georgetown and Rainier Valley areas.

South End land use: Six portable classrooms for Columbia Elementary School

Magnolia's Safadago becomes Eagle Scout

Magnolia resident Gregory Glenn Safadago became Boy Scout Troop 80's 98th Eagle Scout on July 14, with a ceremony honoring his achievement at Magnolia United Church of Christ. For his Eagle project, Overlake School sophomore Safadago organized and supervised 45 volunteers in maintaining a Discovery Park trail surrounding a pond by the park's north parking lot. He obtained a donation of gravel from Glacier Northwest for the project.

'Dewdrops' land at Tavona

Vince Lyons is the first to approach Ulrich Pakker's 'Dewdrops' sculpture after its unveiling on July 24 at the Tavona Condominiums, 3333 Wallingford Ave. N. The Wallingford Community Council helped to fund the artwork.
