A recent report from the Surgeon General confirms that smoking during pregnancy puts both the mom and the baby at risk. Expectant moms who smoke are more likely to have miscarriages or deliver prematurely.And babies born to smoking moms have more than double the risk for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The 500 block of East Pine Street, known for bars such as the Cha Cha Lounge and Kincora's, will soon be replaced with a large, mixed-use condominium development. While the building's imminent demolition will change the character of the street and has not been greeted with enthusiasm, the street has been preserved electronically. "Requiem for a Block," a Web site developed by Capitol Hill resident Vaun Raymond, was launched to serve as a virtual museum for the street as it was prior to redevelopment.
Children play on the newly rededicated Dinosaur Bone play structure in Volunteer Park on Friday, June 29. The play sculpture, first unveiled in 1961, had been in disrepair and required a thorough restoration. Built to honor Dorothy Block, a park commissioner and civic activist, the sculpture was designed by Charles W. Smith and restored by Seattle's Artisan Finishes. The Block family, along with community members and city representatives, attended the rededication. The play sculpture is located near the Volunteer Park wading pool.
Nine poets featured in the newly-released anthology, "Limbs of the Pine, Peaks of the Range," will read at Richard Hugo House, 1634 11th Ave. on Tuesday, July 10. The 7:30 p.m. reading will happen on the main floor cabaret with each poet reading for about five minutes.<br
Choir director Eric Banks freely admitted his group, the Esoterics, attracts "music geeks" because of its devotion to new works, quite often sung in non-European languages.
