In pursuit of happiness

The French are different from us. When I first saw Paris, I was instantly enamored with this magnificent metropolis - as, I would imagine, any first-time visitor would be. What impressed me most, however, was not the grand architecture, the rich history, the cultural versatility. Rather, it was the ability of the Parisians to maintain a sense of tranquility, even leisureliness, in the midst of all the razzle-dazzle of big-city life.

Making like Madonna: trainer teaches workout inspired by yoga, dance

It sounds like some arcane mechanical device you'd need years of training and a state certificate just to install. But, according to Capitol Hill-based fitness trainer Michele McCauley, the Gyrotonic Expansion System is actually an exercise program that combines the fluidity and integrated movement of ballet with the toning and core support one finds in Pilates.

A 'Scandal' to be relished

Words, words, words. I was brought up with a deep appreciation for the beauty of the English language and a love of words. Words can paint pictures and ex-press emotions and tell imaginative stories, especially the wonderful words of Shakespeare. I am actively involved with the English Speaking Union's efforts to keep his words alive through education and local high school Shakespeare competitions. Over the years, I have come to appreciate the work of the Seattle Shakespeare Company, Washington state's only year-round professional theater dedicated to producing the work of William Shakespeare and other classic playwrights.

Down there on a visit

Our tour of the Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame's new exhibit begins with a robe. One white robe, wide ribs, pressed flat. Joe Turkel wore it in "Blade Runner" when he played Eldon Tyrell, master manufacturer of android "replicants." He confronted his own creation, played by Rutger Hauer, and died horribly. Pressed and mounted in a case, the robe appears quite benign. It is only by reading its history that significance blooms.

Graduating with honors at Seattle Shakespeare's 'SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL

I'VE A DELICIOUS BIT OF GOSSIP for you. Now don't tell anyone, but Stephanie Shine has been prancing around in her underwear in front of scores of people. Quite shameless, don't you think? Well, it might be, were she not playing Lady Sneerwell in Seattle Shakespeare's wonderful production of "The School for Scandal" where rumor is the central element. Written by Richard Brinsley Sheridan in 1777, this comedy of manners offers a stinging rebuke to all who wantonly destroy reputations though malicious gossip.

A Habit of Giving

Magnolia resident Eva Gianutsos made the most of a recent haircut: she donated 14 inches of ponytail to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from hair loss for any reason. Three years ago she donated a similar amount of hair. Wielding the shears was Alexandria Slider, owner/stylist of Soul the Salon (2508 Fifth Ave.), who donated her time for a good cause.
