Recently I had such an experience while driving my Metro bus.I stopped to pick up passengers, then glanced at a nearby news-stand headline on childhood malnutrition. As riders boarded my coach, a heavy woman with her similarly proportioned children commanded that I lower the bus. Watching this mom and her brood struggle to board the bus, juxtaposed with the news article, epitomized the Grand Canyon-sized dichotomy between obesity here vs. starvation in the impoverished world.

The second annual VJ Battle in Seattle will be held on June 13 from 6 - 10 p.m. in the Capitol Hill Arts Center Showroom. "Opticlash 2" will feature video jockeys battling to mix video images on two huge screens. Competitors face off in a head-to-head, elimination-style battle judged on creativity, skill and innovation.
As part of this year's Seattle International Film Festival, Congressman Jim McDermott will join a special screening of Sandy Cioffi's "Sweet Crude," a documentary about Nigeria's Niger Delta. McDermott will participate in an interactive Q&A; session with Cioffi and one of the film's key characters, Nigerian-native Joel Bisina on Saturday, June 16, at 11 a.m. The film will be screened at the Neptune Theatre on Friday, June 15, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, June 16, at 11 a.m.

The American Red Cross is strongly urging people to be prepared this summer when around the water. They are advising people to learn to swim and swim well, never leave small children unattended near any body of water, keep lifesaving gear handy, know when it's too dangerous, eliminate temptation by securing personal swimming pools from children, know what you're getting into by checking the weather and refraining from drinking alcohol while swimming or boating.
The Columbia City Gallery is looking for artists to submit their art for the 2nd Annual Juried Exhibit. The exhibit will run Sept. 19 through Nov. 11 under the theme of "Heat." For a $30 entry fee, applicants can submit up to three pieces of art for consideration. All pieces must be accompanied by a JPEG (one per entry, or two per each 3-D submission) no larger than 1200x1200 at 300 dpi, named with the title of each piece on a single CD.
As the Seattle International Film Festival rolls into its final week, a number of edgy new American films take the spotlight, including Paul Todisco's "One Day Like Rain.""The script came out my interest in mysticism and metaphysical studies combined with my love of cinema," said the director, whose first feature "Freak Talks About Sex" played in the 1999 SIFF.Obviously, selling a film that Todisco describes as teen's metaphysical experiment to save the world was not easy.
