Friendship Garden to open at John Hay on Tuesday

The new Friendship Garden atJohn Hay Elementary School, conceived in memory of the late Siri Mayo, will be ready for dedication Tuesday, June 12. From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. the school will host an open house so that members of the community can come see the new garden and view student artwork on display.

Doing the Stravinsky Polka

Part of Pacific Northwest's 125th birthday celebration for Igor Stravinsky is a segment called "Circus Polka," and these six Magnolia young ladies are in turn part of that. Three Dollar Bill Cinema releases summer schedule

The producers of the Lesbian & Gay Film Festival are presenting a variety of queer film events with their Three Dollar Bill Cinema summer series. This summer, moviegoers can look forward to a number of events including: an outdoor screening of "Hairspray" shorty after dusk at Volunteer Park on June 23, a Buffy the Vampire Slayer sing-a-long on June 29 and 30 the Egyptian Theatre, the Seattle Black Pride Film Festival at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center on July 21 and 22, the second annual Karaoke Challenge on July 31 at the Northwest Film Forum, "Features from the Black Lagoon" on Aug. 11, 18 and 26 at Cal Anderson Park and Translations: Seattle Transgender Film Festival on Aug. 31 through Sept. 3.

Blaine gets large grant for beautification, playground upgrade

The landscaping around the Catharine Blaine K-8 School has been looking a little worse for the wear lately, as has the playground behind the school.That will change soon, thanks to a recently awarded $73,804 matching grant from the Department of Neighborhoods, according to Blaine parent Nancy Gilbert, who wrote the grant proposal.

Hansa, the 6-year-old elephant who had been a crowd favorite since her birth at the Woodland Park Zoo, died in her sleep on Friday, June 8. The Elephant Barn was closed to the public that day.Zookeepers had been monitoring the Asian elephant's health for a week because of her colic-like symptoms, but tests were inconclusive, zoo officials said.

It's a go for the Queen Anne Farmers Market, which is set to operate Thursdays from 3 to 7 p.m. beginning on June 28 in the parking lot of McClure Middle School, said George Counts, chair of the market group.

New home a-comin' for Hilltop Children's Center

The Hilltop Children's Center, a longtime fixture of the upper Queen Anne neighborhood, has found a new home. Readers may remember that after 35 years the Center's landlord, the Queen Anne Lutheran Church, needed its space back.Hilltop will be transferring its nationally renowned childcare operation to 4 Nickerson St., down by Seattle Pacific University and the Ship Canal, very soon.

A bridge too far

Work proceeds apace on the long-awaited Magnolia-to-West-Seattle Bridge, expected to go into service sometime in the ... What was that? It's a future section of the new Hood Canal Bridge, being built in Magnolia but eventually to be floated up and over to the Olympic Peninsula?... Never mind.

Magnolia artist scores Aquarium commission

A reputation is one thing, but having connections can make life a whole lot easier for struggling artists. Take Crystal Ouzillou.She and her husband, Mendy Ouzillou, moved to Magnolia a year or so ago from Austin, Texas, where Crystal had made a name for herself as a jewelry artist who works with silver, gems and fused glass.

Fort Lawton is not good venue for homeless

The Magnolia Community Club held a general meeting on April 17 at Catharine Blaine School exclusively on the issue of the fate of Fort Lawton after the Army Reserves move out in 2009 and it is declared surplus property. According to the federal law controlling this process (BRAC), the city of Seattle is the Local Reuse Authority (LRA) for the departments of Defense and Housing and Urban Development. When MCC planned this meeting, city staff assigned to LRA duties expected to present the first draft of the reuse plan to the Magnolia community, but it didn't happen...There should be no "homeless housing" at this site.After the military leaves, the Fort Lawton property essentially becomes part of Discovery Park, and as every-one knows - including the police - there are too many homeless living in the park as it is.

Heads up - these incessant early summer rains are NOT effectively irrigating our gardens.It is so annoyingly sad, these June rains here in the Puget Sound region. This past weekend families were in the throes of celebrating graduations, but the ceremonies were held in our outdoor pavilions - Qwest Field and Husky stadium. Wet, damp caps and gowns, soggy, dispirited family members of all ages, and in unison they smiled bravely. But behind the discomfort there were triumphant stories that send the soul soaring once again.
