Shorten Wagoner Inc. to W'Inc and you've got Wink, a new Queen Anne hair salon. "I brainstormed with my friends," says owner Rebecca Wagoner. "We had a long list of names. We chose this one because it's cute and trendy."Wink opened on March 27. Wagoner purchased an existing salon and changed its name and décor. The floor plan is much like it was before, but now the space is more stylish and restful.
It's been a big year for SAM. The free-to-the-public Olympic Sculpture Park transformed a degraded Belltown site into a verdant art park offering spectacular views of the city and its awe-inspiring surrounding landscape. And now the downtown museum has doubled its exhibit space and acquired nearly 1,000 new, high-quality art works, most of them gifts from the region's wealthy art patrons. These are not secondary pieces by key artists, the sort of work you find in so many museums outside of the country's major art centers. They're gems that will place Seattle among the important art meccas of our country.Although most Seattleites aren't aware of it, private art collections of international significance have been quietly growing throughout the region for the past 50 years. In an unprecedented act of generosity, much in these collections has been donated to the museum to coincide with its 75th birthday and the opening of the expanded downtown site.

Last week in these pages, I took our venerable Seattle International Film Festival to task for missing opportunities to educate and enlighten as well as entertain those who flock to Seattle's annual movie marathon.
Mrs. Florence Foster Jenkins ... Never was there a singer so committed to her music who was so bad at making it. And you can see her reincarnated at ACT in its current production, "Souvenir." Though this may not sound like an endorsement, I am here to tell you that this is one of the funniest plays to hit Seattle this year.
May 4 marked the beginning of a new "green" movement at Lawton Elementary: walking school buses. The past three Fridays, many Lawton students walked to school, along with teachers, staff and parent volunteers. Lawton already sets an example in the Seattle School District with its "green team" and active recycling of compostibles. The idea of walking school buses provides a myriad of benefits, including cutting down on carbon emissions, decreasing traffic and energizing students for the school day. <br

A big change has overtaken Washington's Click it or Ticket campaign, and it just might change seatbelt enforcement efforts throughout the United States. For the first time since the project's inception, seatbelt patrols have moved to nighttime hours, as of May 21."Many people think that law enforcement can't see unbuckled motorists at night, so seatbelt use is lower, and consequently the nighttime death rate is four times what it is during the day," said Lowell Porter, director of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC). "This project will change that."
The fear that the demolition of the Seventh Church of Christ, Scientist on Queen Anne Hill could expose the two young children of Jorge Barón and Tyler Crone to lead paint appears to be valid, according to the Center for Disease Control."Unless proper precautions are followed, lead paint can contaminate dust or soil when it deteriorates or is disturbed during maintenance, repainting, remodeling, demolition or lead paint removal, according to the CDC Web site. "In fact," the Web site adds, "dust and soil contamination from lead paint are now the main sources of lead exposure for children."
