Go below the surface to prevent skin cancer

Binge eating disorder - are you at risk?

Everyone overeats once in a while. There's the feast at Thanksgiving, where you gorge yourself, unbutton your waistband and sprawl on the couch. And the dinner party where you toss down one too many cocktails and nosh on far too many appetizers. But there's a much more serious condition involving overindulgence. It's called binge eating disorder, and it's the most common eating disorder, affecting more people than anorexia and bulimia combined.

SIFF is BIG!!! ...that's it?

The gargantuan Seattle International Film Festival looms like Godzilla on the horizon, signaling that it's time for every reviewer in Rain City to write an obligatory gush piece about the embarrassment of cinematic riches SIFF spews every spring. And, trust me, there's a whole lot in this all-over-the-map affair to gush about. First and foremost, Big Numbers top our film fest's claim to fame: From May 24 through June 12, The Largest Film Festival Ever will screen 405 films, representing 60 countries, 211 narrative features, 61 docs, 12 archival flicks, 48 world premières, 39 North American premières, 20 U.S. premières, etc., etc.

'Tis the season for mushrooms

'Tis the season for mushrooms - or at least the season for morels, the popular fungus with dozens of Web sites dedicated to its existence, and mycological groupies who wait all year for its momentous appearance. Morels, which are in season in locally for around four weeks beginning in May, can also be found in the wild as early as April and as late as mid-June. However, they're a valuable commodity both during and prior to their "official" season: Sosio's Fruit and Produce Stand in Pike Place Market had them a few weeks ago for almost $50 a pound! Now, they're about half the price, available at most farmers markets in town and ripe for the pickin', so to speak.

QA Wexley 'school' something completely different

The "Wexley School for girls" on Nickerson Street near the Fremont Bridge isn't actually a school, and it doesn't have anything to do with refinishing pianos or antiques, as a painted sign on one window seems to indicate.Instead, it's an advertising agency that uses humor in 80 to 90 percent of the ads it pumps out, explains Chris Lohman, an account executive and lead producer for the company.

A last chance for plants at Orca Elementary

The sale was the last one at the school's Columbia City location. Hundreds of people chose from thousands of plants, all started and grown by Orca students and sold for a very reasonable price. South End forum takes aim at failures and racism of the War on Drugs

COLUMBIA CITY - The message at last week's community forum, which featured such anti-prohibition speakers as former Seattle Police chief-turned-author Norm Stamper, was loud and clear: the United States' War on Drugs is kaput - a losing battle. The May 17 panel discussion - which took place at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center in front of a standing room only crowd of 250-plus people - was a scathing indictment of the current legal policy against controlled substances, from marijuana and LSD to so-called harder street drugs like heroin and crack.
