Winning artist

Winning artist: Joanna Vong (with Southwest Airlines' Linnea Sallberg and Rep. Jim McDermott), a senior at Garfield High School, 400 23rd Ave., was chosen by judges to represent the 7th Congressional District in this year's Congressional High School Art Competition with her painting "Tree of Life."
Vong will attend the unveiling of her painting on June 14 in Washington, D.C., where it will hang in the Cannon Tunnel that links House of Representatives office buildings to the Capitol.
For her winning entry, Vong will receive a $10,000 scholarship to the Art Institute of Seattle, a one-year membership to the Seattle Art Museum and three round-trip Southwest Airlines tickets.
Vong's artwork is a result of her involvement in One World Now, which hosted an artist from Ghana who inspired her to try painting for the first time. "Tree of Life" is Vong's first-ever painting.[[In-content Ad]]
