Whole Foods collects bikes for West African students

Whole Foods Market-Interbay (2001 15th Ave. W.) is collecting adult-size bikes and bike parts on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., to help students in rural Togo, West Africa.

Those donating a bike will be entered to win an Alaffia gift basket of fair-trade natural body-care products from Olympia-based Alaffia.

Students in rural Togo must walk an average of 5 to 15 miles a day to attend school. Because of that, 91 percent of girls and 48 percent of boys drop out of school before completing the sixth grade. Since 2004, Alaffia has distributed more than 4,500 used bicycles to disadvantaged students in Togo through its Bicycles for Education Program. According to Alaffia, 95 percent of students who receive an Alaffia bike stay in school and graduate.
