This summer, high school students who did not pass the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) can enroll in a program that aims to help struggling high school students meet graduation and proficiency requirements that will expose them to the opportunities of a college education.
This, the second year of the "Summer College" program, will help over 350 high school students pass the WASL test, if they did not do so in the spring. The program consists of two components: one focusing on increasing math proficiency and another helping ninth-and 10th-grade students who scored a level 2 on at least one WASL assessment.
The math proficiency program will help 150 students with one-on-one tutoring who scored at level 1 or a low level 2 on the mathematics section of the WASL.
This five-week program will operate five day per week and will also offer classes in literacy and other college-level classes. The second component will help 200 students by offering mathematics and literacy courses and an exciting enrichment course that will count toward high school graduation.
Immediately following Summer College courses, students may retake the WASL tests they did not pass. Students must score a 3 or a 4 in order to pass the WASL testing.
Mayor Greg Nickels proposed investing $107,000 in Summer College in the city's 2007 Supplemental Budget, using Families & Education Levy funding to pay for enrichment course, classroom maintenance, lunches and classroom supplies. The Levy is also investing $150,000 in tutoring services, as the Washington State Legislature added $19,374,924 for remedial assistance in the 2007 State budget with $599,099 slated for Seattle Public Schools.
These course are being offered at two community college campuses - North Seattle Community College as well as South Seattle Community College - from July 5 through August 3.
Eligible students will be notified via mail following the release of the WASL scores from the state. Parents or students wishing to register or desiring more information on Summer College can call Seattle Public Schools at 252-0815.
