Uptown Stroll opens in new park

Under a hot sun on Aug. 23, the 8th Annual Uptown Stroll - A Festival of Art in Action - kicked off in Uptown's brand new venue, Counterbalance Park: An Urban Oasis. More than 30 artists displayed their creations, from hand-thrown pots, jewelry and exotic masks to oil paintings, collages, photography, quilting and more. Art was created on-the-spot in the En Plein Air Division, and others had their work for sale throughout the day as they created in their own genre. The kids enjoyed face painting by Lisa Lancaster and her daughter Lauren Ansingh, the Crafty Ladies knitted and crocheted hats for their special cause (cancer patients) and the teens danced to DJ Commandr Whitehead's music.
The Stroll was chaired by the
amazing Jane Horowitz. Her committee included Kathy and
Keith Biever, who recruited and organized the artists; Ann Pearce with the Church of Scientology, who provided most of the event's volunteers/ambassadors; and Luke Madsen of Northwestern Mutual, who brought on sponsors for the event. Special acknowledgment goes to Jean Sundborg for emceeing the Stroll.
Joining Jacquie Kaner and John Gessner on the jury was Jill Arnow, new Executive Director of the Greater Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce.
Winners in the General Division were: Cliff Hare, first place; Candace Lange, second place; and Wanda Garrity, third place, with Honorable Mentions going to Martha Ann, Ben Arstad, Larine Chung, Kathryn Conway, Eva Carleton and Brittany Carleton Burns and Gregory Engel.
In the En Plein Air Division, Liz Sheets took first place; Matt Bazemore, second; Wyly Astley, third. Honorable Mentions went to Dana Smaller and John Berry.
