Our village sidewalks are rising up. There are gaps, uneven large areas, bulges, etc. These areas are scattered around the entire village.
As you leave your car to see a doctor, dentist, shop or mail a letter, you must step over these raised and missing areas. I have tripped and been there to assist seniors trying to get to their doctor, etc., who have been thrown off balance by these surfaces.
I thought our bond vote and usual tax-based maintenance fund took care of these issues. In the recent past, I was told it would be taken care of, and nothing has happened. Now I just became aware of a press release from SDOT dated Sept. 5 listing open houses to vote on "projects" to spend neighborhood money. When did ordinary streets and sidewalk maintenance become "boutique projects"?
The press release has not been circulated in any area I frequent. I have not read about it until today in the [Sept. 26 Queen Anne &] Magnolia News. I noticed that all the open-house dates have taken place. There was no open house in Magnolia.... Is this a secret project that will go away as no one votes? The city will claim as the News indicated that there was no interest!
Notification should have been by mail to all taxpayers. A vote should not be needed to repair safety issues regarding roads and sidewalks. These are ordinary maintenance and safety issues. I know we are not considered a tourist zone, but with the cruise ships about to dock in our neighborhood next summer and Discovery Park and the Marina nearby, we do get our share of walkers. We 98199 residents do pay large taxes, and we do VOTE!
