Not just a walk around the block

The 100 children in The Valley School's pre-kindergarten through fifth grade voluntarily gave up their recess and class time to make laps around their Madison Valley block for a Jan. 21 walkathon fund raiser for the South Asia tsunami victims. Their collective efforts totaled 997 laps and generated $10,000 in pledged donations for each lap completed for the Red Cross tsunami fund.

Fourth-grader Josie Parks, who did 13 laps, said, "I felt good because I knew I was helping people by giving money so they could have homes and food."

Giuliana Sheldon, a fifth-grader who did 14 laps, added, "Everybody was so enthusiastic to help, and that made it really fun."

Fourth-grader Cal Hoffman, who ran 14 laps, agreed, adding, "The part I didn't like about it was I was really sore the next day."[[In-content Ad]]
