Transfer station to remain open

WALLINGFORD - The city has decided to dump its plans for a third garbage transfer station in Georgetown and instead keep the two existing ones open, including the North Recycling and Transfer Station in Wallingford.

With its renewed focus on recycling and reducing waste, the city is working on a new resolution called Zero Waste Strategy, which includes a new organics program that would require single-family households to sort food waste and encourages building contractors to recycle materials.

Also, the city's two existing transfer stations would be updated and expanded to handle more recycling.

A City Council committee will vote on the resolution on Tuesday, July 10, before it goes to the full council.
