To the Three R's add: Restaurants

You have to eat, right? And you like the idea of helping kids to read? Have we - well, they - got a deal for you!

Next Wednesday, Sept. 26, restaurants across Washington state will donate a portion of their proceeds to help provide new books and reading resources to children in need. "Dish Up Literacy," a benefit for Page Ahead Children's Literacy Program, will allow diners to put books in the hands of kids simply by going out to eat.

Three of the dozens of restaurants involved happen to be in Queen Anne: Julia's on Queen Anne, Ten Mercer and McMenamins Queen Anne.

"It's easy for restaurant owners to see the benefits of supporting this event," said Page Ahead executive director Susan Dibble, "because Page Ahead supplies free books and reading services to kids in their neighborhood. Also, this year's event will feature a drawing for round-trip airline tickets for two!"

For 17 years the nonprofit organization has been providing new books for at-risk children, helping parents to read with their children and promoting community involvement in literacy. This year, Page Ahead has given 19,746 books to 7,770 Seattle children and 150,000 books to nearly 50,000 children across the state.[[In-content Ad]]
