There's a runway in Lower Queen Anne?

Amateur fashionistas get serious about helping the Helpline

Fashion runways are usually reserved for the picture-perfect women and men of the modeling world, showing off the latest designer clothing lines that most people can't afford.

Not anymore.

Queen Anne residents will be treated to quite a display June 21 when local business people - rather than Tyra Banks - strut their stuff at a slightly different fashion show hosted by the Greater Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber will put on a "Second Time Around" fashion show at the Best Western Executive Inn from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to benefit the Queen Anne Helpline Clothing Closet. Tickets to the event are $30 for Chamber members and $35 for nonmembers.

Those who attend will be treated to lunch and a brief program before Chamber members make their runway debuts sporting the donated clothing in what figures to be a lighthearted display of fashion.

Seattle Department of Transportation workers, Port of Seattle guards and local personalities also are expected to take part in the fashion show.

The idea for the event came from a conversation that Chamber executive director Margaret Irvine had with assistant Helpline director Suzanne McCallum. "It came about in talking to the Helpline and the need to fill their professional clothing closet," Irvine said.

She and McCallum brainstormed a whimsical fashion show featuring solicited donations of clothing. These will be modeled at the fashion show in the areas of "In the Field," "Members at Play," "Powerful People" and "After 5."

Accessories will be available for sale after the show.

"The people in this community are so generous that the Helpline can ask for fashion show donations, and I think there will be a great response," McCallum stated.

The Helpline said that the response has indeed been up to par, and that enough clothing has been donated that most will not be shown at the show itself.

The clothing, along with the fees collected for the luncheon, will benefit the Helpline as it nears its 25th anniversary.

"We hope we can make a significant contribution to the Queen Anne Helpline," Irvine said.

The Best Western Executive Inn is located at 200 Taylor Ave. N. Those interested in attending can contact Irvine at 283-6876 to reserve a spot.
