The Overlook: Is that thunder ... or the Crown of Queen Anne Fun Run?

On Saturday, July 15, the 20th Annual Crown of Queen Anne Fun Run & Walk in support of the Queen Anne Helpline will begin. The 3.3-mile race may be run or walked. It's a flat course that circles the Crown of Queen Anne and highlights our beautiful city views.

Preregistration is available online, queenannehelpline.org, or at Super Jock & Jill, in the Green Lake area through July 12. You may also preregister at Metropolitan Market, 1908 Queen Anne Ave. N., on either July 13 or 14 from noon until 9 p.m. Preregistration is $20 beforehand, $23 the day of the event.

T-shirts may be purchased for $10. All event proceeds support the Queen Anne Helpline.

Participants meet at 7:30 a.m. on the 15th at the Queen Anne Lutheran Church, 2400 Eighth Ave. W. Activities begin with bagels, coffee, water and a warm-up group stretch led by Jennifer from Queen Anne Physical Therapy. Walkers lead the way at 8 a.m., and runners start 20 minutes later. The finish line is located at Coe Elementary School, atop the west side of the hill.

All participants are encouraged to design their own style of running hats or crowns. There's a prize for the best one, but don't forget: function over extravagance! You must be wearing your crown at the end of the race.

In addition, awards await first-place male, female and child runners, walker and oldest finishers. There will be a drawing for prizes donated by local merchants - everything from kids' toys to gift certificates.

Water and refreshments will also be available.

Afterward, be sure to head up to McClure Middle School for the Second Annual Crown of Queen Anne Children's Parade - join the young and the "young at heart." Everyone is invited to take part; just meet at 11 a.m. in the parking lot at McClure Middle School, First Ave. W. & W. Crockett St. Ride a bike or your "Razor," decorate a float or wagon, dress up, walk and sing, "...'cause there'll be dancing, dancing in the streets."

Ask a local Queen Anne merchant if they are sponsoring a float to celebrate Queen Anne Days. The Greater Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce and Queen Anne Helpline co-sponsor this official Seafair event. Everyone is invited to join the Queen Anne Community Center's free community barbecue following the parade.

Queen Anne Helpline would like to thank its sponsors for their support and for making this event possible: Wells Fargo Bank, Harper Electric, CTIA Pemco, City Eye Care, Tully's Coffee, KING-5, 13 Boston Hair Designs, The Compleat Company, Noah's New York Bagels, Safeway, Boeing and Queen Anne Avenue Books, Queen Anne Gardens, Queen Anne Eye Clinic, Queen Anne Chiropractic, Queen Anne Physical Therapy and many more.

As the Music Man might say, "Come run & hear the '76 Trombones!" See you there!
