The Friends of Old Hay invite the community to celebrate the beginning of summer with an informal chess festival and neighborhood gathering on Saturday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free, family-friendly event takes place at the original John Hay School site, 411 N. Boston St.
International Chess Master Leo Stefurak will be on hand to play simultaneous games with players of all ages and levels. There will also be informal matches at tables around the site. Some chess sets will be provided; bring your own if you have one. Players can also enjoy the outdoor chessboard with oversize chess-pieces.
Since the school site is now the home of the Secondary Bilingual Orientation Center (SBOC) for newly arrived immigrant students, additional entertainment on Saturday will include SBOC students performing multicultural dances and an exhibit of student art and photos. Ethnic handicrafts will also be available for purchase to support the student scholarship fund.
Throughout the summer, community members can continue to enjoy free use of the outdoor chessboard and giant chesspieces.
And throughout the year, the site and the buildings are available for community use after-school hours.
Queen Anne neighbors are warmly invited to come by on June 16 to get better acquainted.
