STREET TALK: 'Do Americans need to make sacrifices to stop global warming?'

DIANE JOHNSON
"Yes, we do. I was just recently in Brazil. President Bush came there and was trying to sweet-talk them into planting more sugar cane for ethanol. In order to do that, they would need to tear down more of the Amazon [rainforest] - the lungs of the earth. We need to find a way to step away from more autos - SUVs - and be more conscious of our CO2 emissions."

MARK LYLE
"Absolutely. Global warming affects our children and our children's children. It seems like we have already made some sacrifices and it didn't hurt, but everyone thinks that the next step will be more painful. Now, we just need the government to help us take it to the next level.

KATE MURPHY
"Yes, we need to consume less gas, change our housing and energy needs and recycle everything. We could also switch to solar and biodiesel. We need to become more aware of our energy consumption and the available alternatives."

ARTIE SCHREIBER "Yes. Everyone has a carbon footprint, and we all need to be aware of how big or small our footprint is. I drive a big car, but I don't drive too much and I am not stuck in traffic all of the time."

DEVON ALL
"Yes. Although, we may not be in the generation that will suffer, our kids will. We are already seeing the effects of global warming. We need to start using electric cars instead of gas and switch to more efficient products like the Energy Star products."

BRENDA LORENTZAN
"Yes. Just look at all of these cars on the road with only one person in them. I think that it is a bigger picture than we might think. Vermont's warm winter this year caused the death of a lot of maple trees. We see the affects of global warming in our fish runs. It's so easy to just go on your merry way and think that everyone else will take care of the problem. We have to take personal action, but in addition to that, we need to move that action into our government as well. Right now, our government wants us to use oil and gas. It is all about money and commerce[[In-content Ad]]
