Since opening five years ago, Crow is still leaving quite the impression on the neighborhood. Located at 823 Fifth Ave. N., the restaurant has become a staple for those craving homemade favorites with a touch of European and Northwest inspiration.
Crow's menu changes monthly- depending on the season and which ingredients are fresh and accessible at the time. Owners Craig Serbousek and Jesse Thomas modestly play down the ideas behind their dishes.
"We try not to be pretentious with our food," Thomas said. "They're simple - we just want our guests to feel comfortable and be able to provide them with the great home-cooked meals they're familiar with."
And familiarity seems to be something Crow is most famous for: the two dishes that can always be found on the menu- the homemade lasagne ($16), and pan roasted chicken ($17)-have been bringing back regulars from the neighborhood weekly, since opening.
These dishes have remained so popular, they are also included on the menu at Crow's restaurant in upper-Queen Anne, Betty (1507 Queen Anne Ave. N.), which is moving into its second year of business this spring. Serbousek describes the two restaurants as being similar in the food served, but different in atmosphere. Regardless, the neighborhood doesn't appear to be picking favorites, as both restaurants are busy any given night of the week.
With the unpredictable economy in the last year, Serbousek and Thomas are very grateful for their loyal regulars. "We really could not have gotten through without the neighborhood... they have been so supportive, and wonderful at both Betty and Crow," Thomas said. To help give back during these uncertain times, both restaurants are featuring a three-course fixed menu Sunday through Thursday for $30 through this spring, including entrées such as the braised beef short ribs-normally Crow's most expensive dish priced at $20.
Thomas can be found cooking at both restaurants during the week and encourages friends from the neighborhood to stop in and say hello, or stay for a bite at the chef's counter. Not only will you get to see your meal prepared from start to finish, but if you happen to mention to Thomas that you are a baseball fan-or a Giants fan in particular-you may just make a new friend.
