Sprucing up our back yard

Bayview-Kinnear Park sits directly below the Kerry Park viewpoint at Prospect Street and Third Avenue West. From the Kerry overlook it's easy to mistake the verdant, treesy zone as one big back yard absentmindedly attached to the nearby houses.

The 1-acre park is connected to the viewpoint by two staircases and a grassy hillside and has a ballfield and playground. A new design calls for extensive additional seating, new play equipment and hiking trails on the unused slope between the park and the viewpoint.

That requires money, of course, and fundraising efforts to make the park renovation a reality continue.

At the grassroots level (as it were), there will be a rummage sale in the park this Saturday, July 23, at 9 a.m.

Higher up the foodchain, the Bayview-Kinnear Park Improvement Project has received a $7,500 grant from Safeco Insurance toward its $270,000 campaign to transform the park into a community gathering place and destination play area. Safeco is the first corporation to recognize the park's potential with a financial contribution.

Looming yet larger (as he does), Mayor Greg Nickels has recommended the City Council approve a $99,637 matching grant to match donations and volunteer hours dollar-for-dollar.

And, yes, there will be an Art Tile Painting Party in the park next month - to be precise, Aug. 27 at 10 a.m.
