At its April 9 meeting, the Port of Seattle completed the first tangible step for its proposed surplussing and sale of the West Yard at Smith Cove. This action will move forward the much-anticipated land swap, taking the Port out of ownership and making King County and the City of Seattle the owners of that property.
The result will be a proposed 200,000-square-foot beachfront Smith Cove Park and a county combined sewer-overflow storage facility.
According to Magnolia Community Club board member Bruce Carter, who has been working on this issue for nearly three years, the Port is expected to finalize this action after a public hearing at the Port’s regular meeting on April 23, at 1 p.m., at Sea-Tac International Airport. The public is invited to make comments at that time. It is expected that the sale will be finalized at that meeting.
Carter also thanked Metropolitan King County Councilmember Larry Phillips, Seattle City Councilmember Sally Bagshaw and former Port Commission president Gael Tarleton for taken leading roles in bringing the sale to fruition.
