Seniors eligible for cat-adoption discounts

The Seattle Animal Shelter is now offering a new program to seniors in Greater Seattle who have the Gold Card or FLASH Card.

Through the new Golden Pets for Golden Years programs, cardholders can adopt a cat age 6 and older for free and receive a 50-percent discount on a pet license.

This program supplements a current program for cardholders that offers a 50-percent discount on adoption fees for cats age 2 and older.

These cats are often house-trained and already familiar with people and other pets, according to Don Jordan, director of the Seattle Animal Shelter.

Adoption prices range from $82 to $87 and include initial vaccinations, deworming, feline leukemia testing, spaying or neutering, a microchip for identification and a certificate for a free veterinarian health exam.

The Gold Card and the FLASH Card are part of a countywide program to promote health and access to services by publicizing toll-free assistance telephone numbers.

Cardholders also can use these cards to register for services and programs and as library cards at Seattle Public Library branches.

Eligible residents of Greater Seattle can obtain the cards at:

z Any Neighborhood Service Center;

z Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens, 618 Second Ave., in the Alaska Building; or

z Seattle Animal Shelter, 2061 15th Ave. W., one mile south of the Ballard Bridge.

For more information about the cards, call 684-0500.
