On March 27, Seattle Seahawk Marcus Trufant visited Peter Kirk Elementary School and addressed the students on the importance of eating well and staying active.
The visit was part of the school's National Nutrition Month program, which was created to engage students in developing healthy eating habits National Nutrition Month program, which was created to engage students in developing healthy eating habits. The program is part of the school's yearlong efforts to implement the district's new nutrition and physical activity policy.
Trufant told the kids he eats fruits and vegetables and dairy products at most meals and makes sure to get plenty of sleep every night. He went on to say that he eats junk food once in a while, but not all the time, or his body wouldn't perform at the level that a top, professional athlete needs. The kids were extremely excited by his talk and offered lots of good comments about how they try to stay healthy, too.
Healthy successes at Peter Kirk Elementary outside of the lunch menu program include eliminating all soda pop from school events, limiting the variety of treats at PTSA sponsored events to one, providing teachers with small prizes for class rewards in place of candy, making nutrition presentations to classrooms and student groups and providing information to the Peter Kirk Elementary community.
