SCDS is 2007 'Earth Hero'

Seattle Country Day School was recently named a 2007 Earth Hero at School by King County Executive Ron Sims. The school was recognized for its stewardship of three Queen Anne parks where students in the K-3 division work year-round planting flowers and trees, weeding, spreading soil and mulch, raking leaves, collecting litter and learning the importance of caring for the environment.

"Our 'Earth Heroes at Schools' have dedicated themselves to preserving and protecting our local environment, and to educating young people and others about the importance of being committed stewards of our earth and its resources," Sims said. "I'm proud to recognize their achievements."

The Earth Heroes at School Awards honor individuals and programs whose values and actions support the region's environment and high quality of life. This year the county named 18 winners.

"The passion and commitment of our local heroes to preserve our environmental legacy in King County is an example after which we should model our own actions," Sims said. "We are fortunate to have these environmental stewards in our midst."

The SCDS environmental stewardship program was created four years ago by teacher and Queen Anne resident Sarah Willis.

"Little Howe" Park was the initial focus of the endeavor; it has expanded to include Rodgers and Mayfair parks.

"We are so honored to receive this award and recognition for the hard work the children have put into these parks," Willis said. "They have really learned the importance of caring for our environmental assets."

Third-grade student Cole Mc-Cullough, a Magnolia resident, was on hand along with Willis to accept the award at an April 19 ceremony.

"The kids really have fun working at the parks," he said. "We like helping the environment and being good to our neighborhood."
