It starts early and continues into the afternoon.
It includes a fun run and/or walk, a kids parade, a community picnic and an upper Queen Anne merchants sidewalk sale that runs all day.
Queen Anne Day, Saturday, July 7, gets underway with the Queen Anne Helpline's annual Fun Run and Walk. Participants will assemble at Queen Anne Lutheran Church, one block west of Coe Elementary School at Eighth West and West McGraw, to stretch, hydrate and visit. It's also the place to register for those who haven't. Walkers set out at 8 a.m. from Fifth West and West Halladay; runners go 20 minutes later.
The flat and scenic, 3.3-mile course circles the top of the Hill and finishes at Coe Elementary. Participants then gather on the lawn of Queen Anne Lutheran Church for an awards ceremony and a random drawing for prizes supplied by neighborhood businesses.
Preregistration take places July 5-6 at Metropolitan Market at 1908 Queen Anne Ave. N. from noon to 9 p.m. The $30 price includes a T-shirt. Day-of-race registration is $33.
The event includes lean and determined runners, little children and senior citizens, families, a few leashed canines, runners wearing funny hats and, most recently, scantily clad, barefooters accustomed to running nude on racier circuits. Sometimes, for a touch of homegrown melodrama, there is an order-of-finish controversy.
Proceeds benefit the Queen Anne Helpline. For more information go to: QueenAnneHelpline.org or call 282-1540.
Speaking of unique charm: The children's parade assembles at 11 a.m. at the McClure Middle School parking lot at First West and West McGraw before setting out at 11:30 a.m. There will be music and amazing get-ups. At parade's end come the free community barbecue picnic and games at the Queen Anne Community Center, 1901 First Ave. W. from noon to 2 p.m.
It has never rained on the kids parade.
