Roberta Lorraine King, who spent much of her life in Queen Anne and Magnolia, died Aug. 13 in Mount Vernon, Wash.
She was 72.
Born Jan. 29, 1935, in Napa, Calif., to Lawrance and Evetta Mitchell, Roberta Lorraine Mitchell spent her early years in California but moved to Seattle with her family during her grade-school years. She attended Coe Elementary and then graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1951. She went on to graduate from Whitworth College in Spokane. At Whitworth as at QAHS, she was a cheerleader.
In 1957 she married Jack King at Bethany Presbyterian Church on Queen Anne. The marriage was performed by her father, who was then the head pastor at Bethany.
In 1958 the Kings had a son, Kevin, and in 1962 daughter Karen came along. The family lived on Queen Anne from 1957 to 1960. They then moved to Magnolia, where they would live from 1960 to 1996. Mr. and Mrs. King then moved to La Conner, where they lived on their boat until Mrs. King died.
While raising her family, Mrs. King was very active in PTSA and the Magnolia Community Club. She served in many offices, including president of the Queen Anne High School PTSA and president of the Magnolia Community Club.
She was very active in Republican politics and worked hard to support many candidates, including Sen. Slade Gordon.
Mrs. King will be remembered as a loving Christian woman who put others ahead of herself, truly modeling the call of Jesus Christ. She will be remembered for her warmth, her sense of humor, her love of sports and taking joy in family, friends and life. She was loved deeply by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Mrs. King was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by husband Jack King, son Kevin King, daughter Karen King, granddaughter Morgan Chasson and brother Tim Mitchell.
Services will be held Thursday, Aug. 23, 3 p.m. at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 1818 Queen Anne Ave. N. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Roberta King's name be made to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
