Richard James Savery

Longtime Queen Anne resident Richard "Dick" James Savery passed away January 31

Mr. Savery was born in Tacoma in 1915. He attended Moran Boys School on Bainbridge Island, Stadium High School in Tacoma and then went to Menlo College in California on a football scholarship. He was injured playing football and came back to the Northwest, eventually graduating from University of Puget Sound in 1938.

Mr. Savery moved to Seattle and met his wife of 63 years, Betty Jane Dignan, a graduate of West Queen Anne Elementary and Queen Anne High School. The couple lived on Warren Avenue for more than 60 years. Their four daughters-Janet, Marilyn, Marsha and Carolyn- attended Queen Anne High.

Mr. Savery was a loyal and devoted family man whose patience was constantly challenged by raising four daughters. He and his wife chaperoned dozens of school dances and were active in the PTA for more than 20 years.

Mr. Savery loved all sports, especially baseball. When his playing days were over, he both coached and umpired in Seattle. He and his family treasured the summers spent on Bainbridge Island. Mr. Savery possessed a sharp wit to the end and will be remembered for his keen observations and comments on how people went about their lives. A memorial and celebration of his life will be held at Palisade Restaurant at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20.[[In-content Ad]]
