The following poem is from the forthcoming “David Williams’ Infernal, Internal Journal”; it is reprinted here with the author’s permission in remembrance of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, who was killed on Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas.
“November 1963”
by David Williams
He left his home,
Our national palace,
To meet the people in the streets of Dallas.
And then we heard the awful word:
“The President’s been shot in the back of the head.”
Followed by, “Oh, God! My God...the President’s dead.”
We had the spirit, the charm and the vision,
But how long did they last?
Just one thousand days,
Then a bullet’s incision,
And then the torch was passed.
DAVID WILLIAMS is a third-generation Seattleite who graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1962, the year of the World’s Fair; he now lives in Belltown.
