■ AFFORDABLE HOUSING: The city is funding $3 million to the Low Income Housing Institute's development of LAKE CITY COURT, which will provide support services for chronically homeless people and some units for veterans.
Lake City Court - at 12730, 12738 and 12746 33rd Ave. N.E. - will house 75 apartments, the North Seattle Helpline food bank and medical/dental clinic on the main floor and Seattle Mental Health support services.
The $16.8 million project also received $320,000 capital from the Veterans Administration and services funding for 16 units specifically designated for veterans.
■ DISCOUNTS ON COMPOST BINS, RAIN BARRELS: The city is offering local gardeners discounts on its compost bins and rain barrels.
The Green Cone food-composting bins are two for $40 when purchased together (more than $100 each retail); limit two per household. Food scraps such as fruits and vegetables, breads and grains, eggshells, coffee grounds and tea bags can be deposited into these composting bins.
The yard-waste compost bins, which retail for more than $70, are $25, with a limit of one per household. Grass clippings, leaves, stalks, dead plants, small twigs and most weeds can go into these.
Seattle Rain Barrels are $59 each, plus tax, with no limit per household; they retail for more than $80 each. These barrels collect enough water to care for plants and flowerpots for several weeks.
They can be purchased on-line at www. seattle.gov/binsandbarrels or by calling 684-0190. Sales are restricted to Seattle residents.
Home delivery is available for a small charge, or orders can be picked up at the Seattle Conservation Corps office at Magnuson Park on weekdays, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
■ DESIGN GUIDELINES: The City Council recently adopted the NORTH DISTRICT/LAKE CITY NEIGHBORHOODS DESIGN GUIDELINES, which are used when reviewing new multifamily and commercial development within the affected area.
The guidelines, which augment the existing Citywide Design Guidelines for Multifamily and Commercial Buildings, apply to the area bounded by Lake Washington and 15th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 145th and 95th streets.
A copy of the new guidelines is available on-line at www.seattle.gov/dpd/Publications/Design_Review_Guidelines. Copies also can be purchased at the Department of Planning and Development's Public Resource Center, 700 Fifth Ave., 20th floor.
