Andrew Greenwald walked into the Queen Anne Safeway last Wednesday to buy some groceries and walked out with $100,000.
Greenwald, son of Queen Anne/Magnolia News' columnist Linda of London, aka Linda Greenwald, had taken her to get groceries. During the course of the shopping tour, Greenwald took his mother home to rest, then returned to the store to get the last few items on the list. On his way out, he stopped at the Lotto machine.
"I had a 20-dollar bill and put it in the machine and got four tickets. The first was a $10 winner. The next was a $20 winner then a $50 winner and then the $100,000. I was amazed. I was standing in the store and I didn't quite believe it."
To be sure of his fortune with the Fab Fortune Lotto ticket, he went to Holly in customer service who verified the win.
"She checked it for me to make sure I wasn't delusional," Greenwald said with a laugh.
He took the ticket to the Lotto office in Federal Way where officials took his picture and presented him with an oversized check.
He first told his mother of the win and then his daughter (whose bills he promised to settle). He then took a friend out to dinner at Antonio's in Bellevue. He plans on paying off some of his bills, too. He also went out and got himself a Tempurpedic mattress, upon which we're sure he's sleeping quite well.
Greenwald also helped out a married couple he knows. The wife was pregnant and they were both out of work. How much of the $75,000 he gave (Washington State takes 25 percent in taxes) was not divulged.
This wasn't Greenwald's first win. About eight years ago, he bought a Vegas Nights scratch ticket and won $50,000. Over the years, he'd won smaller payoffs such as $1,000. A Queen Anne resident since 1969, Greenwald plays Lotto about five times a week.
