Queen Anne Historical Society plans annual Mount Pleasant Cemetery Tour

The Queen Anne Historical Society will conduct its annual walking tour of Mount Pleasant Cemetery June 23, starting at 10:00 a.m.

The tour will go on regardless of the weather.

Kim Turner, the Society’s Research Chairperson, will lead the public on a free walking tour of the cemetery grounds. Turner has led tours of the cemetery for a number of years. The theme of this year’s tour is “Face-Off: People Who Opposed Injustice; People Who Defined Society.”

Mount Pleasant Cemetery, at 700 West Raye Street on upper Queen Anne, dates back to 1895, making it is one of the oldest cemeteries in the area. A number of important figures from Seattle’s history are buried there.

The tour will cover much of the cemetery’s 40 acres and will cross uneven ground — comfortable shoes are a necessity. People unable to walk the distance are welcome to drop out at any point along the route.  Some of the gravesites will be familiar to those who have taken the tour in years past; there will be additions this year, including several to be included because of their unique markers.

Parking is available on street near the cemetery. The number 2 Metro bus stops at West Raye Street. The complete tour lasts about two hours. Those planning to attend should gather a little before 10 a.m. at the main gate, where the Historical Society will have a table.
