The Queen Anne Farmers Market went to the dogs on Thursday, Aug. 26, as the open market hosted its second annual Dog Day.
Dogs of all shapes and sizes from the Queen Anne area kept themselves busy with plenty of sniffing, wagging and begging, charming their owners and other residents enjoying the open market.
Local dog trainer David Wiley of Barkbusters served as the judge at the 2010 Queen Canine competition, with dog treat prizes supplied by Val Stouffer of Queen Anne's Methow Dog, a gourmet dog treat maker and supplier.
This year's Queen Canine title went to the regal collie Lana, who had been found abandoned a few years ago in Ellensburg, pregnant with nine pups, according to her owner Beth.
Homes have been found for Lana and all her pups. From castaway to queen, Lana has traveled far in her short life. What's more, she has learned commands in three languages: English, Russian and German.
Several other dogs were awarded prizes, including spaniels Pete and Jerry, a dachshund/yorkie or "dorky" named Archie, a yellow lab named Joleen and her choco buddy, Tolby-Mo.
The Queen Anne market is one of the few that welcomes dogs. Many neighbors bring their pooches out to the market weekly to enjoy the scenery, the treats and the crowd. But the season is drawing to a close, with only six Thursday evening markets left to stroll the stands and socialize.
